Moonshot (Kimi K2.5)

Getting your Moonshot API key

Moonshot is the easiest provider to set up. Unlike Anthropic and OpenAI, you don't need a special admin key — your regular API key works for balance checks.

No special key needed. Moonshot's balance API works with any valid API key. If you already have a Moonshot/Kimi API key, just paste it into TokenMeter — you're done.

Step by step

1

Go to the Moonshot Platform

Visit platform.moonshot.cn/console. You'll need to create an account if you don't have one.

2

Navigate to API Keys

Click API Keys in the sidebar or dashboard.

3

Create a new key

Click create, give it a name, done.

4

Copy and paste into TokenMeter

Open TokenMeter → Settings → Accounts → paste in the Moonshot (Kimi) field → Save Keys.

Key format

sk-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Moonshot keys start with sk-.

How balance tracking works

Moonshot's API doesn't have a detailed usage-by-model endpoint like Anthropic or OpenAI. Instead, TokenMeter tracks your spending through balance changes:

💡

Balance is in USD. Moonshot reports balances in US dollars regardless of how you topped up. TokenMeter converts to your display currency using the same FX rates as everything else.

Troubleshooting

"Shows $0 balance"

Your account might not have any credits loaded. Moonshot uses a prepaid balance system — you need to add funds through their platform before making API calls.

"Today's spend shows $0 even though I used the API"

If you added the key partway through the day, the starting balance was recorded at that moment. Spend tracking will be accurate from the next day onward (or from the next app launch).

"The platform is in Chinese"

The Moonshot platform (platform.moonshot.cn) defaults to Chinese. Look for a language toggle, or use your browser's translate feature. The API itself works fine internationally — only the console UI is region-specific.
